Overview

The structure of this Festschrift is based on Herman Waetjen's own three-fold interest in hermeneutics and interpretation theories, in Biblical exegesis and interpretation of Biblical texts, and in integrating what human beings study and teach with how they live and act. Hence, the contributors to this Festschrift have focused their articles on three areas of investigation: hermeneutics and the exploration of different theories and models of interpretation; critical exegesis and interpretation of particular Biblical texts; and practical application of insights derived from Biblical scholarship. The first section on hermeneutics, the authors reflect on how readers approach and interpret Biblical texts and how one's hermeneutical stance will influence what is perceived and understood in a given book or passage. The second section contains critical interpretations of Biblical passages from the New Testament that deal with issues that arise out of the early Christian movement and remain important for Christians to this day. Finally, the practical insights that the authors have derived from their Biblical-theological work show the profound implications and applications that the study of the Bible can have for the social-political realm. Taken together, these three sections of essays reflect the movement in Waetjen's own work and teaching from hermeneutics to critical interpretation to thoughtful application of what he gleaned from the Biblical text.
